As we got far too little of Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm in JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM, the upcoming third installment of the JURASSIC WORLD trilogy is looking to rectify that mistake by bringing Goldblum back once again along with Sam Neill as Dr. Alan Grant and Laura Dern as Dr. Ellie Sattler. This pleases me.
JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM came to a close with many dinosaurs being freed to run wild on the American mainland, leading to the possibility of a much different world where humans and dinosaurs will be forced to coexist. While speaking with Empire, JURASSIC WORLD 3 director Colin Trevorrow, who is also co-writing the script alongside Emily Carmichael, discussed why the time was finally right to bring back the original JURASSIC PARK trio, and why they weren't included in the first JURASSIC WORLD film.
We’d have had to come up with a reason why Ellie, Malcolm and Grant all went to the theme park on the exact same day it broke down – again. The next film allows the legacy characters to be a part of the story in an organic way. Emily Carmichael and I call it ‘Jurassic Park VI’, because it is.
Although we caught a glimpse of Jeff Goldblum in JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM, we haven't seen Sam Neill and Laura Dern since JURASSIC PARK III, nearly twenty years ago. "You start asking the most basic questions: who are these people now? What do they make of the new world they’re living in, and how do they feel about being part of its history?" Trevorrow teased. "Ultimately it will be in collaboration with the actors. They know and love these characters. We’ll do it together." Trevorrow has also said that JURASSIC WORLD 3 will be closer in tone to Steven Spielberg's 1993 JURASSIC PARK than either JURASSIC WORLD or JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM, saying "If I could contextualize each film, I would say Jurassic World was an action adventure, Fallen Kingdom is kind of a horror suspense film, and Jurassic World 3 will be a science thriller in the same way that Jurassic Park was."
JURASSIC WORLD 3 is set for a June 11, 2021 release.
