Colin Trevorrow is taking a naturalistic approach to Jurassic World 3

If the ending of JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM, with its images of dinosaurs escaping into American suburbs and dino DNA falling into the wrong hands, got your imagination running wild about a sequel in which prehistoric creatures run loose in the streets wreaking havoc and tearing people to shreds, you might want to temper those expectations. During a recent conversation with Jurassic Outpost, director/producer Colin Trevorrow, the filmmaker overseeing this JURASSIC WORLD trilogy, said that his approach to JURASSIC WORLD 3 is going to be much more low-key than some fans are expecting.

The final lines in FALLEN KINGDOM are delivered by Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), who says that dinosaurs and humans are now going to have to learn how to co-exist. In the next film, it sounds like humans will be co-existing with dinosaurs in much the same way that we already co-exist with all sorts of predators. Trevorrow says: 

I just have no idea what would motivate dinosaurs to terrorize a city. They can’t organize. Right now we’ve got lethal predators in wild areas surrounding cities all over the world. They don’t go pack hunting for humans in urban areas. The world I get excited about is the one where it’s possible that a dinosaur might run out in front of your car on a foggy backroad, or invade your campground looking for food. A world where dinosaur interaction is unlikely but possible — the same way we watch out for bears or sharks. We hunt animals, we traffic them, we herd them, we breed them, we invade their territory and pay the price, but we don’t go to war with them. If that was the case, we’d have lost that war a long time ago."

Trevorrow directed the first JURASSIC WORLD, then handed the reins over to J.A. Bayona for FALLEN KINGDOM. He'll be directing JURASSIC WORLD 3, and is taking such a "real world" approach to the material that he's even looking to nature documentaries as inspiration for the visual style.

J.A. and (cinematographer Oscar Faura) shot a beautiful film. If I’m being honest, I’d say they shot such a beautiful film, I’m not even looking to try and match it. They achieved something so gorgeous to look at, my instinct is to break the classical language of these films a bit and plunge us into a world that feels real and naturalistic. I want to go outside into environments we’ve never seen these animals in. I’m watching a lot of Planet Earth."

Personally, I'd be all for an over-the-top gorefest in which dinosaurs are seen attacking people in city streets and taking on the military, but I understand why we wouldn't get that in a film that's part of the JURASSIC PARK franchise.

Trevorrow is currently writing the JURASSIC WORLD 3 script with Emily Carmichael, who recently worked on PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING. The film is heading toward a June 11, 2021 release.
