Colin Trevorrow describes Jurassic World sequel as a parable

In a recent interview, JURASSIC WORLD director Colin Trevorrow said that he was working with screenwriter Derek Connolly and director J.A. Bayona, who is taking over the helm from him for the JURASSIC WORLD sequel, to make sure a follow-up would have a reason to exist. Speaking at the Sitges Film Festival in Spain, Trevorrow may have revealed the aspect that makes the filmmakers believe the sequel has a purpose.

According to Trevorrow, JURASSIC WORLD 2 (not the official title) will deal with more complex issues than its predecessor did.

The dinosaurs will be a parable of the treatment animals receive today: the abuse, medical experimentation, pets, having wild animals in zoos like prisons, the use the military has made of them, animals as weapons.

The second part will be a very different movie that will explore new paths. For that reason, it was clear that it needed to be Bayona who would direct it, in order to have it grow and evolve with his very personal vision."

Last year, Trevorrow pointed out that JURASSIC WORLD plants the seeds for the dinosaur-creating technology going open source, and it sounds like that will be happening in Bayona's film. From the quote above, I take it that people outside of Jurassic Park are going to be making their own dinosaurs, but they won't be treating them properly. That could be an interesting approach for a film, and not one I ever expected to see.

Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will be reprising their WORLD roles in the sequel, which is scheduled for a June 22, 2018 release.
