The 28th Annual SAG Awards were handed out last night and we had some surprise winners that may have upended the Oscar race on the film side of things while the TV winners also offered up outcomes that many didn’t see coming.
Apple TV+ scored big with CODA last night. While many predicted The Power of the Dog, Belfast, or West Side Story would take the Outstanding Cast Award, CODA swept in and took top honors, per Deadline. This marks the first time that a predominantly deaf cast has taken home this award and it proves that a story about a family that is moving, funny, and real, can be universally accepted through any form of communication. Another star of the film, Troy Kotsur, grabbed another SAG Award in the Supporting Actor category and he became the first deaf actor to win an individual SAG Award as well.
The Best Actress Oscar race is really heating up now with Jessica Chastain’s SAG win in the category for The Eyes of Tammy Faye. A SAG win doesn’t always mean that it translates to taking home the Academy Award but it does make the category more interesting and shows that there may not be one sure-thing frontrunner to take home the top prize.
Best Actor honors went as expected with Will Smith taking home the prize for his riveting turn in King Richard. Honestly, this award was coming down to Smith, Benedict Cumberbatch, or Andrew Garfield, so hearing any of those names would’ve been expected. A SAG win here gives Smith an extra boost to get his first-ever Academy Award after two previous nominations.
West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose has been the frontrunner for Best Supporting Actress and that streak continued with her win for playing Anita in the musical adaptation. This same role brought Rita Moreno her Oscar after the 1961 film was released and it looks like this will be the case for DeBose. If it happens, it will be exactly 60 years after Moreno became the first Latina to do it in the exact same role.
The winners on the TV side also offered up some surprises. In the Lead Actor and Actress categories, Lee Jung-Jae and Jung Ho-Yeun won big for Netflix’s Squid Game. This makes the series a real player in the upcoming TV awards season. It wasn’t a clean sweep, however, as HBO’s Succession took home the TV Drama Ensemble award and proved its power as an acting showcase for its deeply talented ensemble cast.
On the comedy side, Apple TV+ was a winner once again with a Comedy Ensemble win for Ted Lasso and a Lead Actor in a Comedy win for Jason Sudeikis as the titular character. Jean Smart took home the Lead Comedy Actress award for her acclaimed role on Hacks, which allowed Ted Lasso not to totally sweep. In the limited series slot, Kate Winslet continued a solid run for Mare of Easttown while Michael Keaton took home the award on the male side for his turn as Dr. Samul Finnix in Dopesick.
