Cobra Kai renewed for Season 5 at Netflix

Netflix has renewed Cobra Kai for a fifth season.

Much like the show’s loyal fanbase, Netflix can’t get enough of Cobra Kai. It’s been reported that Netflix has renewed Cobra Kai for a fifth season ahead of its fourth season premiere in December.

While this might be the least surprising news of the hour, it certainly is exciting. Cobra Kai has been hitting hard with fans since the first season debuted on YouTube in 2018. The show is a smash with critics as well. It’s true. As a spin-off of The Karate Kid, the show earned four Emmy nominations in July including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Sound Editing for a Comedy, Outstanding Stunt Performance, and Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy.

When Cobra Kai began, the public focus was aimed squarely on the return of Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso and William Zabka as his nemesis Johnny Lawrence. However, once audiences got hit with the teen drama that the series has to offer, there were even more reasons to keep tuning in.

Season 4 of Cobra Kai debuts on Netflix later this year and will pick up after the events of Season 3. During the Season 3 finale, Daniel and Johnny combine dojos in the interest of taking down John Kreese (Martin Kove) at the All Valley Tournament. When Season 4 hits the mats, Thomas Ian Griffith (The Karate Kid III) will make his return to the franchise as the villainous Terry Silver.

Having grown up with The Karate Kid movies, this resurgence for the franchise kind of blows my mind. I never would have guessed that people of all ages would embrace Cobra Kai like they clearly have. Hell, even my mom watches the show. She’ll call me up and ask if I’m “all caught up.” It’s hilarious and very endearing.
