Cobie Smulders, who portrayed the tenacious, tough-as-nails S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill in last summer’s THE AVENGERS is slated to jump back into the Marvel fray with next year’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and potentially in the now-filming S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show. Smulders, who also stars on the hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother, shared some info about the projects with I Am Rogue, talking about her committment to the role and what her current knowledge is of the upcoming projects.
Smulders said she didn’t know exactly when she’d report for duty on the CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER set, only that “it’s some time in March or June.” When asked if she’d read the script, she replied, “I’ve seen parts of it, but yeah I don’t know much. This is Marvel! They don’t let you know anything.”
The actress commented on the script pages for Marvel Studios’ films, saying, “It’s very watermarked scripts, heavily watermarked. Yeah, they don’t let you know like the day of, but they are very secretive and I think they are still figuring stuff out.” That should come as no surprise, as Marvel has demonstrated its resolve to retain secrecy continuously, but most effectively with THE AVENGERS, which was had everyone speculating on details right up to the premiere.
When discussing the possibllity of bringing Agent Hill to the small screen for the Joss Whedon-produced S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show, Smulders seems to be upbeat about the prospect, confirming that it has been discussed. “The commitments to [How I Met Your Mother] don’t affect it. And I can’t really say but there are definite talks about it.”
Overall, Smulders is committed to returning to the role, saying, “Oh yeah! I’m very excited. I will do Maria Hill until they fire me and hire someone else to do it,” she said. I’m a fan of Smulders and find her to be one of the saving graces of the now-flailing How I Met Your Mother. She’s both lovely and talented and I look forward to seeing her branch out. Marvel needs more females in their films and Hollywood needs more actresses like her.
Smulders will next be seen in SAFE HAVEN, opening February 14, 2013, and the Vince Vaughn comedy THE DELIVERY MAN out October 4, 2013, then back in the skin-tight duds of Maria Hill for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER on April, 4, 2014.
