C’mon Hollywood #200

… we’ve said this 200 times!

Wow, 200 columns already. Much like we did with the 100th C’mon Hollywood, we’ll use this centennial mark to reflect back at the last 100 columns we’ve written and take a look and see how Hollywood has been doing.

When going through the past 100 columns, I noticed that a lot of them ended up coming true. A couple of them were momentous occasions as we saw the end of the format war (142) and the end of the writer’s strike (141). We had some events that were long overdue, like Marty finally getting his Oscar that he so deserved (115). Then we had a decision that caused fanboys across the globe to give a collective sigh of relief when the WB scrubbed their plans for a JLA movie (136). WATCHMEN didn’t get delayed (177), although judging by some of your reactions, maybe it should have. Judging by Joaquin’s recent (and very staged) fight, I think we can all agree that Joaquin is, in fact, full of shit (198). And in a weird turn of events, Wolverine himself showed up at Comic Con (169).

He came through after all.

What’s really cool about some of these is that a lot of them are going to be coming true in 2009. It looks like Stallone might be back for good, and what’s more, he even got the Governator to come with him (106). We’re actually getting a G.I. Joe movie (124), although judging by those costumes, I don’t know how that’s going to turn out. Next year will see the return of Spidey (123) and it sounds like they’re going to do the Avengers’ movie the right way (182) .

We have to be careful what we ask for.

Couples were a predominant theme amongst the past 100 columns. I’m still waiting to see if Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan get back together (139), while I really hope Haim and Feldman don’t get back together (175). Are we ever going to get a Batman vs. Superman movie (158)? And how much longer are Matt Damon and Ben Affleck going to be working on their reunion project (105)?

I still want to see these two back together.

There have been some “controversies” as well. I still get emails from people calling me racist for the article I dedicated to Spike Lee (165). But even more than that was the huge response to the request to leave Robin out of Batman (167). Which, it should be noted that I did not intend to make that title ambiguously homosexual. Time will tell if Hollywood is still scared of religion (112), but the recent success of FIREPROOF should help them ease those fears.

What will Nolan do about Robin?

DARK KNIGHT was so close to beating TITANIC (103) and as many near-victories as we had, we have some that just aren’t happening. They’re still making those obnoxious spoof movies (148) and with the CLONE WARS movie and the upcoming TV show, Lucas can’t let go of STAR WARS (160). In their defense, Fox hasn’t done anything to piss me off (190) since the article posted, but then again, it’s only been up for two months.

Say it with me; Ugghhhh

Sometimes reading comments and commentary online can be frustrating because everyone is so negative all the time. I think some people feel that the only way they can be heard is if they rip someone apart or insult something that they know other people like. Even though the nature of this column is to complain, I want to point out that despite the flaws within the Hollywood system, I think I speak for everyone here when I say movies are still f’ing awesome. Nothing will ever beat the feeling of seeing a great film that actually inspires you, or evokes a strong emotion, whatever that emotion might be. So c’mon Hollywood; keep making awesome movies.
