C’mon Hollywood #183

… it’s time for another South Park movie!
by Sturdy

I have to be honest and admit that I don’t really know what the popular opinion on South Park is anymore. When it first came out, I was in college and it was tough to go anywhere without talking about South Park, or hearing some idiot try to do a Cartman impersonation. Now, I work in an office where everyone is twenty years older than me, so we don’t talk about anything that comes on after 7pm. But regardless of the public opinion, I think the show is just as good as it ever was and it’s still one of, if not the, funniest shows on television.

Great character, but I hate the impersonations.

Regardless of how you feel about the show, you can hopefully admit that the movie was brilliant. It even got a little love at the Oscars and is still a hilarious movie today. Since the show is still going strong, it’s time for them to make another movie. Its been 11 years since the first one came out and given its success, that’s way too long. We’ve had to sit through a few of Trey Parker and Matt Stone experiments, so now it’s time to get back to the moneymaker.

Few writers are as consistently funny as these two

I wouldn’t worry about South Park being past its prime (which it isn’t). I hate to draw any comparisons to THE SIMPSONS, but if they can make a movie after 37 seasons, South Park should be able to do it after 12. THE SIMPSONS was successful because it had the recognizable characters and the movie was really funny. South Park has the characters everyone loves and Trey and Matt are still hilarious guys. Like The Simpsons, there is just so much you can do with the South Park characters. Then when you allow them to do and say whatever they want without the pressure of maintaining a PG rating, the sky’s the limit for Trey and Matt.

There are plenty of good characters to choose from.

THE SIMPSONS movie proved that a show can do well in theaters even though it’s past its prime, but X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE proved that it’s tough for a movie to do well so long after the series is off the air. I realize they’re drastically different shows, but the point is that I don’t want Trey and Matt to wait until the series is over before they make another movie. I would hope the film would still attract an audience, but it’s a gamble. The show is still funny and popular, but I’m afraid the window of opportunity for another movie is slowly dwindling.

Tweek was always my favorite character, although he’s severely underused.

I realize that Trey Parker and Matt Stone can’t just snap their fingers and make a movie appear (or maybe they can???) but I hope that they’re at least keeping some ideas on the back burner with the goal of making another movie at some point in the future. I want the chance to see these characters without the confines of cable television at least one more time before they go away forever.
