It’s time for a new episode of our WTF Happened to This Horror Movie video series, and in this one we’re looking at a film that some may argue isn’t a horror movie – but it does involve people gathering in one location and getting picked off one-by-one, as many horror movies do, so let’s just roll with it. The movie is the 1985 release Clue (watch it HERE), based on the popular board game of the same name. Clue wasn’t exactly a success in ’85, despite the marketing gimmick of being released with three endings (you saw a different one depending on which theatre you saw the movie in), but has gone on to have a massive following of appreciative fans. To hear all about it, check out the video embedded above!
Written and directed by Jonathan Lynn (with John Landis receiving a story credit), Clue has the following synopsis:
Six blackmail victims are invited to an isolated mansion by a man who knows a dark secret from each of their pasts. On arrival, each is given a pseudonym drawn from Cluedo before being introduced to the blackmailer. Each is handed a weapon, at which point the lights are switched off and the blackmailer is killed. Can the guests uncover the murderer before they all become victims?
The film stars Eileen Brennan, Colleen Camp, Tim Curry, Bill Henderson, Howard Hesseman, Madeline Kahn, Jeffrey Kramer, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, Kellye Nakahara, Lee Ving, Lesley Ann Warren, and Jane Wiedlin.
This is what the WTF Happened to This Horror Movie series is all about:
Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster, but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?
The Clue episode of WTF Happened to This Horror Movie was Written by Emilie Black, Edited by Zack Burkett, Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
