There is so much secrecy around the CLOVERFIELD movies that I’m shocked we even know more of them exist. We didn’t know 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE was a thing until two months before it came out, and now we have a whole “Cloververse” on our hands. The third movie – GOD PARTICLE (or CLOVERFIELD STATION, perhaps?) – is supposed to hit this April, and now it turns out that the fourth movie, could follow as soon as a few months later.
Here’s the haps, caps. About a year ago we got word that Paramount and Bad Robot (J.J. Abrams’ production company) was making a sci-fi film called OVERLORD. This movie would focus on a band of soldiers who are dropped behind enemy lines on the eve of D-Day. Their goal? Find out what the Nazis are up to, which turns out involves some seriously messed up sci-fi stuff. Starring Wyatt Russell, Jovan Adepo, Jacob Anderson and more, not only is this a cool sci-fi premise but, as confirmed by Slashfilm, it is indeed the fourth CLOVERFIELD movie – and it’s already done filming.
Filming for the movie started last May, so it should stand to reason it would get a release sometime this year (Box Office Mojo has it placed at October of this year, which could change). Now, that may seem strange to put out two CLOVERFIELD movies in one year, but if you remember, the third film was not intended to be out in 2018. GOD PARTICLE was supposed to come out last year, but several release shifts pushed it all the way back to its current April 20 release. Like OVERLORD, GOD PARTICLE is a movie that was announced as its own, separate thing (with Abrams producing), having nothing to do with the “Cloververse”. Later, it was announced it would, in fact, be another installment in the series.
Rumors are still out there that Paramount is looking to sell GOD PARTICLE (and thus OVERLORD) to Netflix. Given the streaming services knack for releasing new stuff rather quickly it could stand to reason they would release both movies this year with a good six-month gap in between. Much like 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE, the next two films may not have direct relationships to the first CLOVERFIELD movie but may act as “spiritual sequels” that deal with the same series of events. The theme around aliens invading earth is prevalent in all the movies, with other little elements acting as links for all the movies.
There's a ton going on with these movies that we don't understand, and we progress through the year we should know more about with Paramount and Bad Robot have planned for this "Cloververse." Or, like with 10 CLOVERFIELD, we will be kept in the dark for as long as possible until they decide to drop a few trailers on us.
GOD PARTICLE is still slated for April 20.
