Lionsgate's social media thriller XOXO is a project we first heard about more than five years ago, at which time screenwriter Mark Heyman (BLACK SWAN) was circulating the script with BLACK SWAN director Darren Aronofsky attached to produce. Lionsgate picked up XOXO in October of 2011, and ten months later hired THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU writer/director George Nolfi to rewrite the script and direct the film.
Four years of silence followed, but we now we have an update – Nolfi is off the project and has been replaced by Clement Virgo, who will do his own rewrite of the script before directing the film.
Virgo has a working relationship with Lionsgate through the TV series Greenleaf, which airs on Oprah Winfrey's OWN. Virgo is co-showrunner on that family drama and has directed several episodes. His other directorial credits include episodes of American Crime, The Wire, Rogue, and The L Word.
Described as FATAL ATTRACTION for the digital age, XOXO is about
a twentysomething man who meets a female contemporary on Facebook and begins a digital relationship with her, only to find the object of his affections takes the relationship to an obsessed and stalker-y place.
Aronofsky will be producing XOXO with Groundswell Productions' Michael London.
