As a big fan of David Fincher's THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO remake, I can admit that I was more than disappointed when it became clear that we wouldn't see the same team tackle THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE and THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNETS' NEST. However, Sony Pictures wasn't about to let the Millennium series lay dormant, and they set out to resurrect the franchise by adapting the fourth novel in the series, "The Girl in the Spider's Web." Production on the Fede Álvarez (EVIL DEAD) film got underway earlier this year with Claire Foy (The Crown) stepping into the role of Lisbeth Salander, and the actress recently chatted with Yahoo about how her take on the character will be different from what we've seen before.
Both Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara brought a very distinctive look to Lisbeth, but Claire Foy says that Lisbeth's personal style has received a bit of a downgrade in THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB.
It’s quite a pared-down look. The costume we’ve found for Lisbeth isn’t the same as what any of the other actresses have worn, but it feels very like-minded. Her [thinking] now is, ‘I want to make sure that I’m wearing it — it’s not wearing me.'
Lisbeth Salander's ink, including the familiar dragon tattoo, will obviously remain, and Claire Foy added that she personally selected a few new tattoos for Lisbeth to sport in the new film. "I love the tattoos, because I got to help decide what I was having and where they were," Foy said. THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB finds Lisbeth Salander having put the events of the first three novels behind her, but she's soon drawn into a new mystery by Mikael Blomvist (Sverrir Gudnason) involving a top-secret group of hackers known as the Spider Society. "In the first three books, you’re getting her life story, and how she frees herself from the shackles of being a ward of the state," Foy said. "The fourth book is a different story, in a way. It’s the same character, but you’re not joining a Lisbeth who is still dealing with that part of her life. The story we tell, especially in the beginning of the film, is ‘What does she do now? What’s her purpose?’ I’m excited for people to see it; we’re not trying to make it like anything else [in the series], but we’re also not trying to make it wildly different. We’re just trying to be truthful to the story."
THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB is set for a November 9, 2018 release.
