Literary character Lisbeth Salander has been played onscreen by two different actresses in adaptations of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO – Rooney Mara and Noomi Rapace (who also played her in the sequels). Now it’s Claire Foy’s turn, and you can watch her as the black-cloaked Salander in the first trailer for THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER’S WEB from director Fede Alvarez. In this new movie Salander is a hunter of men who abuse women, and while she was a master sleuth in previous iterations she’s clearly added some ass-kicking moves to her cache of skills.
The movie takes place years after the events of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO and finds Lisbeth as a vigilante hunting down men who have hurt women. Soon a new mystery rocks her world and forces her to confront suspicious characters in dangerous scenarios. Written by Alvarez, Steven Knight and Jay Basu, the film also stars Lakeith Stanfield, Sylvia Hoeks, Stephen Merchant, Claes Bang, Christopher Convery, Synnøve Macody Lund, and Vicky Krieps.
The movie certainly has the same bleak, snowy atmosphere of the previous movies, and surely Alvarez will deliver on the gritty tone and suspense. However, this movie seems to be taking more of an action-thriller approach than the dark mystery angle of the Swedish films and the David Fincher remake with Mara. The same elements are still there, just with a little Liam Neeson and John Wick peppered in.
THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB hits theaters November 9.
