Christopher Nolan’s film about the A-Bomb to drop at Universal

Update: Christopher Nolan has found a home for his new film, and it’s not with Warner Bros. After shopping the project around to multiple studios, Nolan has decided to set up camp at Universal. Almost all of Nolan’s feature films since 2002’s Insomnia have been released by Warner Bros., with The Prestige (Disney), and Interstellar (co-distributed by Warners and Paramount) being the two exceptions. Nolan’s decision to abandon his long-standing relationship with Warner Bros. comes after the studio’s decision to debut its 2021 slate day-and-date with HBO Max. “Some of our industry’s biggest filmmakers and most important movie stars went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the greatest movie studio and woke up to find out they were working for the worst streaming service,” Nolan said in December to THR.

For now, it remains unclear if Nolan is done doing business with Warner Bros. indefinitely.

Christopher Nolan’s next movie is starting to take shape and Deadline has reported that it will take place during World War II and revolve around J. Robert Oppenheimer’s development of the atom bomb. It’s certainly not much to go on, but we’ll take any Nolan scraps we can get around here.

However, the more interesting tidbit is that Christopher Nolan’s next movie might not be made at Warner Bros. The director has called Warner Bros. home for nearly twenty years, but he had some harsh words when the studio announced that they would be releasing their entire 2021 theatrical slate simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max. There were even reports earlier this year that said it was unlikely that Christopher Nolan would ever work with them again. To that end, Deadline has heard that several major studios are reading the screenplay and are speaking with Nolan about making the movie. It’s not known if Warner Bros. is one of those studios, but it’s clearly no longer a given that Nolan’s project will land there. The project is thought to be similiar to Dunkirk with a sprawling ensemble cast, and Deadline has heard that frequent Nolan collaborator Cillian Murphy might be involved. It’s probably a good bet that Michael Caine will be onboard as well.

It was also revealed earlier this summer that Netflix’s Scott Stuber was having “ongoing conversations” with Nolan about making his next movie with the streaming service. “If and when he comes up with his new movie, it’s about can we be a home for it and what would we need to do to make that happen,” Stuber said. “He’s an incredible filmmaker. I’m going to do everything I can. In this business I’ve learned you need to have zero ego. I get punched and knocked down and get back up.” It’s hard to imagine Christopher Nolan making a home at Netflix given his stance on preserving the theatrical experience, but stranger things have certainly happened.
