If we learned anything from BIRDMAN, it is that filmmakers known for dramatic movies can segue into any number of genres. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu has done it and so has Alfonso Cuaron. But, Christopher Nolan has made it very clear that while he may explore various genres and filmmaking styles, there is one type of movie he will likely never make.
In an interview with USA Today, the INTERSTELLAR director shared which genre he can never see himself working in and why.
“I would try anything I think except comedy or romantic comedy. Those are very tough genres to work in. They rely on an unanimity of audience response. You screen a comedy for people, and if they don’t laugh, you’ve got to figure out a way to make them laugh. There’s no hiding behind the art of the film. There’s ‘Oh, you don’t get it.'“
“To actually go out there like Todd Phillips or somebody does and make something that an audience has to laugh at it is incredibly underrated as a skill and a really (expletive) difficult thing to pull off," Nolan added. "I’d be terrified about doing that.”
At least Nolan admits that it is something he doesn't see himself capable of making, but I am not sure I agree with his assessment. Directors like Wes Anderson and Woody Allen make funny movies that definitely do not cater to wide audiences and yet their specific type of humor is still universally praised. Nolan could definitely stand to add some funny moments into his dour films but at least we now know why he doesn't.
INTERSTELLAR is now playing.
