Christopher Nolan says that Man of Steel is the biggest possible movie version of Superman

During the Oscar Luncheons, The Playlist got to sit down with Christopher Nolan to talk about MAN OF STEEL and some thoughts on JUSTICE LEAGUE.

To start, the site asked Nolan if he was done with superhero flicks, and added that Warner Bros. may want him to produce on the JUSTICE LEAGUE film and possibly take on a Joss Whedon-like role in the future of D.C. films. He laughed then said, “Well, as I’ve said, and I’ll say definitively again, I am done with the Batman films, the trilogy is completed. It ended in the manner we had envisioned.” When it came to the question of being done with superhero films in general, the director smiled then answered, “Well, I’m producing Superman now and I’m enjoying time off and taking a break.”

For those looking for similarities in MAN OF STEEL and the Batman franchise, you might be disappointed. Nolan understands that the two characters deserve different treatments. This is what he said about them possibly being similar, “Well, somewhat. But I wouldn’t want people to think we’re doing for Superman what we did for Batman.”

He continued on about what we will be seeing in Zack Snyder‘s version of Supes, “It’s very much Zack’s film and I think people are going to love what he’s done. I think it’s really remarkable to take on that character. Superman is a completely different character than Batman. So you can’t in anyway use the same template. But David Goyer had this, I thought, brilliant way to make Superman relatable and relevant for his audience. Zack has built on that and I think it’s incredible what he’s putting together. He’s got a lot of finishing to do on that. Superman is the biggest comic book character of them all and he needs the biggest possible movie version which is what Zack’s doing. It’s really something.”

Oh, and if you were wondering what Nolan’s thoughts were on the ending of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES– here’s a little something. When The Playlist asked if he thought the ending was “radical” this is how he replied, “Radical? Hmm, yes, perhaps for the comic book fans it was. But I think it was appropriate ending for the story we set out to tell.”
