There are few directors out there for me who, the moment I hear what their next project is, I immediately want to know what they’re doing after that. And Christopher Nolan undoubtedly bestrides that list as a colossus, unquestioned in his top spot. The moment THE DARK KNIGHT RISES was announced I was already itching to know what was next, and while we may never know what other projects he considered, his final choice may be at last coming into focus.
INTERSTELLAR is a script by Christopher’s brother Jonathan that has had Steven Spielberg attached to direct since it first landed on the market back in 2006 – in characteristic fashion I can’t tell you too much as to just what it’s about (even if I did know, which I don’t, I wouldn’t tell you anyway), but here’s what can currently be concretely said:
The film “involves time travel and alternate dimensions in a story that sees a group of explorers travel through a wormhole. The script is based on scientific theories developed by a Kip Thorne, a theoretical physicist, a gravitational physicist and astrophysicist at Caltech.” Which is just as well beacuse Christopher, a notorious stickler for technical detail and story machinations, is just about the only man I’d trust these days to follow the newly-established legacy set by Rian Johnson (LOOPER). The dealmaking process itself has been described as “very complicated,” with Christopher having been in talks for months (assumingly in regards to the usual concerns like logistics, budget, and creative control). If INTERSTELLAR does indeed end ip being Nolan’s next, it would be made by both Paramount and Warner Bros., Nolan’s home for the majority of his movie-making career (all three Batman movies, plus INCEPTION and INSOMNIA).
So that’s what we know for now. But what say you – ae you excited to potentially see Nolan tackle straight-up sci-fi? Would you have preferred he did a smaller film (INSOMNIA, THE PRESTIGE) before returning to the world of large-scale, multi-layered filmmaking/storytelling? Or are happy for any new film from Nolan, caveats be damned?
