Not long after he signed on to voice Mario in Universal’s Super Mario Bros. movie comes the news that Chris Pratt is set to lend his voice to another iconic character: Garfield.
THR has reported that Chris Pratt will star in the new animated Garfield movie which will be written by David Reynolds (Finding Nemo) and directed by Mark Dindal (Chicken Little), who previously collaborated on The Emperor’s New Groove. The project was first announced in 2016, but now that Pratt is onboard, you might imagine that the new Garfield movie will start moving forward. Alcon Entertainment is behind the project, having acquired the rights from Garfield creator Jim Davis. Debuting all the way back in 1978, Garfield is an orange tabby who loves lasagna and hates Mondays; you and me both, Garfield. The strip also happens to hold the record for the most widely syndicated comic strip in the world. Jim Davis will serve as an executive producer on the project.
Garfield has made the leap to the big screen twice before in Garfield and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties. Bill Murray voiced the character in both of those movies, and once claimed that he only signed on to the film because he thought that the film’s writer, Joel Cohen, was one of the Coen brothers.
Before stuffing himself with lasagna and coffee, Chris Pratt will next be seen in Jurassic World: Dominion on June 10, 2022 and in Thor: Love and Thunder on July 8, 2022. He’s also set to return for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will start shooting this month after a lengthy delay. The film is slated to hit theaters on May 5, 2023. Pratt also has a sequel to The Tomorrow War in the works as well as The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and The Terminal List, a series for Amazon Studios based on the novels by Jack Carr.
