Chris Pine teases how different Steve Trevor will be in Wonder Woman 1984

When we finally catch up with Wonder Woman/Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) in the upcoming WONDER WOMAN 1984, it will have been more than a few decades since the events of the Amazon warrior's first standalone outing, but although Diana may be damn near immortal, Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) is decidedly not. As we know, the WONDER WOMAN sequel will once again find Chris Pine reprising the role of Steve Trevor, which is surprising not just because of the time which has passed, but because his character was killed off in the last film.

We still don't officially know the reason behind Steve Trevor's apparent resurrection, but Chris Pine recently spoke with Total Film to explain that his character will be in quite a different state of mind this time around.

What I will say about him is that he’s deeply, supremely excited. He’s excited to be back with Diana. He’s excited about this world. Tonally, what’s different is, he’s not world-weary. He’s not jaded. It’s a complete 180 from the tone of the character of the first one.

This places Steve in the "fish out of water" situation this time around, which Chris Pine thought was "a nice idea," adding, "It's a brilliant move on [director] Patty [Jenkins'] part. That’s just one clear indication of a big tonal shift this time out." Furthermore, Pine said that the origins of Steve Trevor's return actually began percolating towards the end of the first WONDER WOMAN film. "Patty, towards the end of the first one, had been marinating on an idea," Pine said. "So yeah, I had an idea that I would come back. I think she may have even started to break the story while we were promoting [the first film]."

It won't just be Steve Trevor who has changed in WONDER WOMAN 1984, as Gal Gadot teased earlier this year that Wonder Woman has majorly evolved as well. "The first movie was a coming of age, it was Diana becoming Wonder Woman." Gadot said. "She was very naive and she didn’t understand the complexities of life. A fish out of water. In this movie, that’s not the case whatsoever. Diana has evolved. She’s much more mature and very wise. However, she’s very lonely. She lost all of her team members and she’s guarded."

WONDER WOMAN 1984 was slated to have hit theaters earlier this month, but owing the the COVID-19 pandemic, the release was pushed back several times before finally settling on an October 2, 2020 release just weeks ago.
