Chris Hemsworth says Thor franchise needs to be reinvented again if it moves forward

If you look back to the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I doubt many of you could have guessed that Thor (Chris Hemsworth) would have more solo movies than any of the other Avengers. The Thor franchise has been through a few reinventions over the years, but if it continues, Chris Hemsworth thinks another major change is needed.

While chatting with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Chris Hemsworth seems to be aware that audiences thought that Thor: Love and Thunder was perhaps a little too comedic. “You look at Thor 1 and 2, they were quite similar. Ragnarok and Love and Thunder are similar. I think it’s about reinventing it,” Hemsworth said. “I’ve had such a unique opportunity with Infinity War and Endgame to do very drastic things with the character. I enjoy that, I like keeping people on their toes. It keeps me on my toes. It keeps me invested.” As Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder changed the tone yet again, the actor doesn’t want to keep doing the same thing. “I’ve said this before but when it becomes too familiar, I think there’s a risk in getting lazy then because I know what I’m doing,” Hemsworth said. “I don’t know if I’m even invited back, but if I was, I think it would have to be a drastically different version in tone, everything, just for my own sanity [Laughs]. Thor lost his mind in that last one. He’s got to figure it out now.

As Chris Hemsworth mentioned, he doesn’t even know if he’ll be returning as Thor again, but the actor did recently say that he’d like to give the character a satisfying conclusion. “I feel like we’d probably have to close the book if I ever did it again, you know what I mean?” Hemsworth said. “I feel like it probably warrants that. I feel like it’d probably be the finale, but that’s not based on anything anyone’s told me or any sort of plans. You have this birth of a hero, the journey of a hero, then the death of a hero, and I don’t know—am I at that stage? Who knows?

The latest Thor sequel found the God of Thunder on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. His short-lived retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi), and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late. Thor: Love and Thunder is available on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD and is also streaming on Disney+.
