AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR will kick off the beginning of the end for some of your favorite Marvel heroes, coming to a massive, nerd-gasmic finale with the fourth movie in May 2019. These two movies mark the final films in the contracts of many long-standing super-regulars, including Chris Hemsworth as the godly Thor. Though his time may be ending, THOR: RAGNAROK brought fresh life to the character, and Hemsworth may not be quite ready to give up the throne (spaceship chair?) of Asgard.
While speaking with IGN in promotion for the upcoming war movie, 12 STRONG, Hemsworth talked about how he wrapped shooting on the fourth AVENGERS movie, meaning he’s officially done with his Marvel contract. That being said, he still has the desire to keep the good times rolling now that the character is, more than ever, starting to be fleshed out:
I’ve just, literally two days ago, finished Avengers 4 and that’s my contract — my preexisting contract is done now, so it’s kind of like, 'wow, that’s it." Two or three films ago I was like, 'okay, a couple more.' I was enjoying it but I was like… I felt a little restricted. And after this last experience with Taika, and actually these last two Avengers, I feel like we’ve reinvented the character a number of times — even in these next two, he evolves again, and you don’t get that opportunity often in a franchise. So I definitely feel a renewed sense of excitement and enthusiasm, and more so than ever, I think.
He went on to talk about how right now all the focus is on the next two AVENGERS movies, but that if the studio does want to keep him on for another solo outing, he’s more than ready to dive back in:
If I had the opportunity to do it again, I think I’d love to. I also think there’s an appetite for it now, or there’s a far greater range of possibilities of where he can go now, what he can do, just because we’ve kind of broken the mold a bit.
His contract is technically completed, but that doesn’t mean Hemsworth can’t return if Marvel wants him to. There’s always new contracts that can be made, or Hemsworth can just come back on a movie-to-movie basis, much like Robert Downey Jr. has been doing for a few years now as Iron Man/Tony Stark.
The current cast of the MCU is too perfect as it is, and seeing any actor be replaced will be a mighty pill to swallow. Can you really imagine anyone else playing Thor, the God of Thunder, other than Chris Hemsworth? When it’s not shaved off the man has cascading blonde locks that flow effortlessly in the breeze, the commanding presence of Zeus himself, and the body of what I imagine the upper half of a Centaur looks like in real life. The man IS Thor, so if the man wants another, he should have another!
AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR with Hemsworth and every other working actor hits theaters May 4.
