Chris Hemsworth confesses to thinking that Thor: The Dark World was “meh”

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Well how do you like that, it turns out that Chris Hemsworth and I have something in common, other than our devilishly-good looks. Recently while chatting with GQ, the international men's magazine, Hemsworth admitted that he thinks THOR: THE DARK WORLD is a less than worthy sequel to the Kenneth Branagh-directed original.

“The first one [Thor] is good, the second one is meh,” Hemsworth told GQ. “What masculinity was, the classic archetype — it just all starts to feel very familiar. I was so aware that we were right on the edge.”

I think several other Marvel fans were dangling off that edge as well, seeing as THOR: THE DARK WORLD is notoriously ranked toward the bottom of several Marvel movie lists, typically placing it among the company of IRON MAN 2 and THE INCREDIBLE HULK.

As EW points out, who also ran a story on Hemsworth lack of enthusiasm for the lackluster Asgardian adventure, Hemsworth offered more insight to his opinion of the film while being a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live last October. During the interview, in which Lord of Thunder was promoting Taika Waititi's THOR: RAGNAROK, Hemsworth said, “We all had, I think, the same want and need and passion to change this up in a big way," the Thor actor told the late night host. "I remember meeting with [director Taika Waititi] and he said ‘let’s just break everything we know and destroy it and rebuild it’ … every day was about exploring the unknown and trying something different. I had got pretty bored of myself as that character, and so did he, and maybe a few people out there. So we thought, ‘let’s do something different.'”

Something different is precisely what we got with Waititi's energetic and humor-filled follow-up. Oh sure, there are those who did not appreciate the WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS director's take, but it's hard to argue that Ragnarok wasn't a complete shift for the character, both in tone and visual style. To each their own and all that, but honestly, I am also a member of Camp Meh when it comes to THOR: THE DARK WORLD.

What are your thoughts? Do you think THOR: THE DARK WORLD isn't getting a fair shake? Is the film better or worse than IRON MAN 2? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
