Chris Evans explains how Captain America: The Winter Soldier will address something overlooked in The Avengers

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER has long been teased as a 1970s style conspiracy thriller, something that sounds damn intriguing compared to the straight action comic adaptations we have seen to date from Marvel. Taking the Captain America character and putting him into a political setting will do wonders for his man out of time story arc.

The time jump from World War II hero to 21st Century Avenger is not something fully addressed since the conclusion of the first CAPTAIN AMERICA movie and overlooked due to the events of THE AVENGERS. Star Chris Evans says that it will be central to the plot of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER.

“In The Avengers we had so many characters you have to address, you don’t really have time to sit with any single one. In this movie there’s a lot going on for Steve. He’s trying to acclimatize to the modern world. I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s about trying to find how he fits. He’s a man from the 1940s. He’s just woken up. For everybody else, it’s been a slow burn to get to where we are in 2014. But for him, suddenly there’s the internet, cellphones and The Patriot Act. The technology’s new to him and so is the access the government has to that technology.”

We often forget this part of the Captain America story since it has been so long in the comics since he has been set in the 1940s. What is nice about what the Russos are doing with CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER is that there seems to be room to develop Steve Rogers as a character and not just a costumed hero.

“To be a good man is difficult,” he says. “To be the best man you can be is even harder. Even though he doesn’t choose to wear his baggage on his sleeve, I think that’s his skill set. He doesn’t moan. There is a depth to him. There are always new things to find. For the first film it was about the new body and responsibilities. Here we get to dive back in with that established. It feels really comfortable coming back to him.”

More than IRON MAN 3 or THOR: THE DARK WORLD, I have been the most excited for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. I really like what Evans brings to the role and I think this is the one Marvel sequel so far that is taking the biggest leap from the first film. Whether the risk pays off is yet to be determined, but with a cast that boasts return performances from Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, and Sebastian Stan along with new actors Robert Redford and Anthony Mackie, THE WINTER SOLDIER looks ready to rock.
