Chris Evans: It feels too soon to return as Captain America

Although Chris Evans would love to return as Captain America, he feels that it’s still too soon for him to come back.

Chris Evans, Captain America, return

When Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) passed on his shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) in Avengers: Endgame, it brought Captain America’s arc to a well-deserved conclusion. However, fans are eagerly awaiting the inevitable day when Chris Evans returns to play Captain America once again, but it likely won’t be anytime soon.

While appearing on Good Morning America to promote the upcoming release of Ghosted, Chris Evans was asked about a possible return as Captain America. “Oh man, you know, as much as I would love to. That was such a special time in my life,” Evans said. “I’m very precious with the character. That’s the problem. I’m so protective of it. To come back, it would have to be for the right reasons and the right timing. It feels a little too soon. Anthony Mackie is Captain America right now. There’s other stories to tell. For now, we ended on such a good note. I would be too worried about tarnishing.

I would agree with Evans; give Anthony Mackie his time as Captain America. At the same time, I’m certain Evans will be back at some point, perhaps in Avengers: Secret Wars? Anthony Mackie explained last year how his version of Captain America will be quite different. “Mine will be different. What you have to realize about Sam—he’s a superhero who is not really a superhero,” Mackie said. “There’s no secret serum. There’s no this or that. I just have wings on my suit that I got from the military. So everything that I do, I do as a common man. When you see me, you might think, “Oh, I can be a superhero, too.” Whereas if you look at Hulk or any of those guys, you can’t compete.

Chris Evans will next be seen starring alongside Ana de Armas in Ghosted. The action rom-com follows salt-of-the-earth Cole (Evans) as he falls head over heels for enigmatic Sadie (Armas) — but then makes the shocking discovery that she’s a secret agent. Before they can decide on a second date, Cole and Sadie are swept away on an international adventure to save the world. Ghosted was directed by Dexter Fletcher from a script by Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers. When the project was first announced, Ghosted was set to star Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson, but Johansson wound up exiting due to scheduling conflicts, and Ana de Armas stepped in to replace her. Ghosted will be released by Apple TV+ on April 21st.
