Chloe Grace Moretz feels she’s done playing Hit-Girl

Earlier this month, Kick-Ass creators Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. were frank about the money KICK-ASS 2 did (or rather didn’t) make, but the idea of a KICK-ASS 3 wasn’t completely out of the question for them. While KICK-ASS 2 barely made it’s budget back domestically, it’s Blu-ray/DVD sales were stronger, bringing in about $100 million (with TV). Hit-Girl herself, Chloe Moretz, doesn’t feel as optimistic about returning to the world of KICK-ASS. She recently spoke out about donning the suit again, as well as her upcoming roles (you can check out the whole interview here), but I’ve included the highlights below.

Moretz on returning to the character of Hit-Girl:

Sadly, I think I’m done with the character. Hit-Girl was a very cool character, but I don’t think there will be any more movies. You make these movies for the fanboys, but nowadays everyone seems to pirate them rather than watch them in the movie theater. KICK-ASS 2 was one of the number one pirated movies of the year, but that doesn’t help us because we need box office figures. We need to prove to the distributors that we can make money from a third and a fourth movie, but because it didn’t do so well, we can’t make another one. If you want more than one movie, everyone has to go and see movies at the cinema. It’s all about the numbers in the theater.

Her opinion on most female superheroes in comics and film:

Whenever there’s a female superhero, it’s always a more sexual plot-line rather than seeing an actual character on screen. I don’t think that’s cool. I think it’s rather sad. I would love to change that. Hopefully, there will be some cool female superhero movies in the future. I hear there’s a Wonder Woman movie coming up. Hopefully they won’t sexualise Wonder Woman, too.

It seems these days it’s all too easy to cite piracy as the number one reason that films aren’t earning box-office dollars, but according to this report from Torrent Freak, KICK-ASS 2 wasn’t even on the top ten torrented movies of 2013. Most of the highest downloaded films did, in fact, make a fair share theatrically. There’s no question that piracy can hurt the box-office draw of any film, but it also seems that if the film is compelling enough, people will go to theaters regardless. In this case I think they need to look at the quality of the film, rather than blaming digital downloads. In any event, I hope Chloe Moretz finds her footing in some more mature material going forward. She really had some meaty roles with the first KICK-ASS and LET ME IN, and given the right character, she can work wonders.

Chloe Grace Moret’s latest film, IF I STAY, is in theaters now.
