Sam Raimi's SPIDER-MAN trilogy remains beloved in the eyes of comic-book movie fans, so they were quite excited when it was revealed that Raimi would be taking the helm of DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS. The sequel will once again find Benedict Cumberbatch reprising his role of Doctor Stephen Strange, and Chiwetel Ejiofor will also be back as Strange's former ally-turned-nemesis, Baron Mordo.
Chiwetel Ejiofor spoke with GamesRadar about his upcoming Netflix movie, THE OLD GUARD, and it was only a matter of time before he was asked about working with Sam Raimi for the DOCTOR STRANGE sequel. Spoiler alert, he's pumped.
I love Sam Raimi, so I'm very excited that he's making a film, the second Doctor Strange. He brings to anything he does, a wealth of imagination and passion. In this genre, he's just one of the seminal figures. I remember seeing Darkman when I was a kid. It was beyond, it's so amazing.
"So I think he has an incredible mind," Ejiofor continued, "and I think he's really able to bring that mind into his storytelling in a really unique way, and it's very suited to the world that's been created by Doctor Strange, and I'm very excited to see what he does with that world." As for Raimi, getting to bring the Sorcerer Supreme back to the big-screen punctuates a name-drop which he included in SPIDER-MAN 2. "I loved Doctor Strange as a kid, but he was always after Spider-Man and Batman for me, he was probably at number five for me of great comic book characters," Raimi said. "He was so original, but when we had that moment in Spider-Man 2 I had no idea that we would ever be making a Doctor Strange movie, so it was really funny to me that coincidentally that line was in the movie. I gotta say I wish we had the foresight to know that I was going to be involved in the project."
DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS is currently slated for a March 25, 2022 release.
