Child’s Play projected to score $12–22 million opening weekend

I don't know about you, but I'm really looking forward to checking out Lars Klevberg's upcoming remake of CHILD'S PLAY. But it looks like I might be in the minority as today Box Office Pro released its projections that claim the flick will only make a reported $12–22 million opening weekend.

They list the pros going for the films as nostalgia for the original movies and an interest in the series returning to it's more adult horror roots. Plus the casting of Aubrey Plaza and Brian Tyree Henry could appeal to millennials. The cons seem to be the volume of horror titles opening this summer, particularly ANNABELLE COMES HOME opening one week later. Plus they claim that nostalgic horror remakes have been modest successes in recent years with comparable titles including the POLTERGEIST ($22.6M) and CARRIE ($16.1M) remakes.

Personally, I think CHILD'S PLAY will make a bit more than $12-22 million opening weekend. But I guess we'll see this summer!

The upcoming remake's official synopsis reads:

A mother (Plaza) gives her son (Bateman) a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature.

The remake is directed by Lars Klevberg (POLAROID) from a screenplay written by KUNG FURY 2 writer Tyler Burton Smith with STEPHEN KING'S IT producers David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith producing. Aaron Schmidt and Chris Ferguson executive produced. Aubrey Plaza stars as Andy's Mom, along with Brian Tyree Henry as Mike, Gabriel Bateman (LIGHTS OUT) as Andy, and Mark Hamill as the voice of Chucky. Beatrice Kitsos, Ty Consiglio, and Carlease Burke co-star. CHILD'S PLAY stalks and slashes its tiny terrifying ass into your local multiplex come June 21, 2019.
