Child’s Play producer confirms remake is intense, gory, and rated R

Lars Klevberg and MGM's upcoming remake of Tom Holland and Don Mancini's CHILD'S PLAY is headed our way this summer with Mark Hamill as the voice of new Chucky. And today we have word via the remake's producer Seth Grahame-Smith (STEPHEN KING'S IT) that this new version of the classic killer doll will be intense, gory, and R-rated. Specifically, producer Seth Grahame-Smith says:

We sort of lean into more of the AI/Kaslan story and hint at a Chucky that is driven by something different than he is in the original series when he's Charles Lee Ray and he's just a truly psychopathic killer in the body of a doll. [Also, there is] the mother/son story, the emotional component of the movie, which I feel like the movie really delivers.

He then adds:

And then above all that, just the intensity, the gore, the fact that the movie is rated R, that it really does go there when it goes there.

And finally he says:

I think the movie looks big, is much bigger than a lot of movies that are our size – very affordable movie, we are. But we had big ambitions. Those are, I'd say, the primary things we're going for.

On top of all these updates from producer Seth Grahame-Smith, the film's director Lars Klevberg also put up a cool update over on Instagram. The filmmaker took the new trailer and added some fun bits of behind-the-scenes trivia to the promo such as how he pitched the movie as "E.T. on acid" and that "almost 80 percent of Chucky in this movie is done with animatronics." It's definitely worth a watch so I suggest checking it out below.

The upcoming remake's official synopsis reads:

A mother (Plaza) gives her son (Bateman) a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature.

The remake is directed by Lars Klevberg (POLAROID) from a screenplay written by KUNG FURY 2 writer Tyler Burton Smith with STEPHEN KING'S IT producers David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith producing. Aaron Schmidt and Chris Ferguson executive produced. Aubrey Plaza stars as Andy's Mom, along with Brian Tyree Henry as Mike, Gabriel Bateman (LIGHTS OUT) as Andy, and Mark Hamill as the voice of Chucky. Beatrice Kitsos, Ty Consiglio, and Carlease Burke co-star. CHILD'S PLAY stalks and slashes its tiny terrifying ass into your local multiplex come June 21, 2019.
