I don't know about you, but I'm really looking forward to checking out Lars Klevberg and MGM's upcoming remake of Tom Holland and Don Mancini's CHILD'S PLAY with Mark Hamill as the voice of new Chucky. And today I have another reason as we now have official word via the MPAA that the remake has been slapped with an R-rating for "bloody horror violence, and language throughout."
This update comes to us on the heels of word via the remake's producer Seth Grahame-Smith (STEPHEN KING'S IT) that this new version of the classic killer doll will be intense, gory, and R-rated. Specifically, Grahame-Smith said:
We sort of lean into more of the AI/Kaslan story and hint at a Chucky that is driven by something different than he is in the original series when he's Charles Lee Ray and he's just a truly psychopathic killer in the body of a doll. [Also, there is] the mother/son story, the emotional component of the movie, which I feel like the movie really delivers.
And then above all that, just the intensity, the gore, the fact that the movie is rated R, that it really does go there when it goes there.
The upcoming remake's official synopsis reads:
A mother (Plaza) gives her son (Bateman) a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature.
The remake is directed by Lars Klevberg (POLAROID) from a screenplay written by KUNG FURY 2 writer Tyler Burton Smith with STEPHEN KING'S IT producers David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith producing. Aaron Schmidt and Chris Ferguson executive produced. Aubrey Plaza stars as Andy's Mom, along with Brian Tyree Henry as Mike, Gabriel Bateman (LIGHTS OUT) as Andy, and Mark Hamill as the voice of Chucky. Beatrice Kitsos, Ty Consiglio, and Carlease Burke co-star. CHILD'S PLAY stalks and slashes its tiny terrifying ass into your local multiplex come June 21, 2019.
