Cher celebrated her 75th birthday with some big news for her legion of fans. The singer and actress took to her Twitter page to announce that a biopic about her life is in the works at Universal Pictures. There is no director or actress attached to the project at this time but there are producers currently involved and her life will get the screenwriting treatment from an Oscar-winning screenwriter.
Cher said in the tweet, "Ok Universal is Doing Biopic With Friends "JUDY CRAYMER, GARY GOETMAN PRODUCING. THEY produced both Mamma Mias, & MY DEAR DEAR Friend 4 YRS, & OSCAR WINNER..ERIC ROTH IS GOING 2 WRITE IT. Forrest Gump, A Star is Born, Suspect, TO NAME A FEW OF IS FILMS." Cher was currently excited about the news because there were a couple of typos in her tweet but she's a legend and is allowed to have quick texting fingers. A fan of Cher's asked why it took 50 years to get a biopic made and Cher responded by saying "I Had More life to Live." This is a life that is deserving of an Oscar-winning writer taking on and Eric Roth is no stranger to great work. The prolific writer won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Forrest Gump and was up for the very same award four other times for The Insider, Munich, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and A Star Is Born. Producers Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman became involved after meeting Cher through her work on the sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. Craymer confirmed the biopic news with the following statement:
"Gary and I are thrilled to be working with Cher again and this time bringing her empowering and true life odyssey to the big screen. One cannot help but be drawn to and inspired by Cher's larger than life talent, fortitude, unique wit, warmth and vision. Her unparalleled success in music, film, and TV have inspired generations. We could not be happier to tell her story to cinema audiences."
Cher's life is pretty perfect for the biopic treatment. She's famous on a worldwide scale and has had a prolific career in both music and film. Cher was nominated for an Oscar twice for her roles in Silkwood and Moonstruck, taking home the Best Actress win for the latter. Known for her contralto singing voice, Cher gained popularity in 1965 as one-half of the folk-rock husband-wife duo Sonny & Cher after their song "I Got You Babe" peaked at number one on the US and UK charts. Across her music career, Cher has sold 100 million records to date and is one of the world's best-selling music artists of all time. She is the only artist to date to have a number-one single on a "Billboard" chart in six consecutive decades, from the 1960s to the 2010s and she has taken home a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, an Academy Award, three Golden Globe Awards, a Cannes Film Festival Award, the Billboard Icon Award, and awards from the Kennedy Center Honors, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America. I'd say that's worthy of her life story being told.
