Earlier this year a new, terrible trend started; the teaser for the trailer, one of the most asinine marketing tools to ever rear it’s ugly head in Hollywood. Fortunately, there is another new potential trend that I fully support; trailer commentary. Anyone that enjoys hearing the director’s perspective can certainly glean some interest from these commentaries, which began recently with Guillermo Del Toro‘s for PACIFIC RIM. Now, we have director Joseph Kosinski talking about the newly-released trailer for the upcoming sci-fi epic OBLIVION, starring Tom Cruise.
Kosinski doesn’t reveal any spoilers, but instead talks about his technique for the film and shows that he is very aware of every element onscreen, which I found to be refreshing. It’s easy to just toss up some cool-looking machines and buildings in the backdrop for a big sci-fi pic, but Kosinski doesn’t just do it for decoration. He lays out the purpose and function of everything you see. It’s that level of attention to detail that separates the the guys making an immersive flick from the guys trying to make a buck.
Enjoy:
OBLIVION, starring Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Melissa Leo, and Nicolaj Coster-Waldau is set to go full sci-fi on April 19, 2013.
