Jude Law is one of those actors that I really want to like. Yes, he has been excellent in the SHERLOCK HOLMES films as well as the recent Steven Soderbergh movies CONTAGION and SIDE EFFECTS, but I just feel like he is playing variations on the same character over and over. What Jude Law needs to do is play someone unlike any character he has played to date. That may very well be the title role in DOM HEMINGWAY.
Directed by Richard Shepard (THE HUNTING PARTY, I KNEW IT WAS YOU), DOM HEMINGWAY sounds like one heck of a good time. Check out the synopsis below:
Jude Law plays DOM HEMINGWAY, a larger-than-life safecracker with a loose fuse who is funny, profane, and dangerous. After twelve years in prison, he sets off with his partner in crime Dickie (Richard E. Grant) looking to collect what he’s owed for keeping his mouth shut and protecting his boss Mr. Fontaine (Demian Birchir). After a near death experience, Dom tries to re-connect with his estranged daughter (Emilia Clarke), but is soon drawn back into the only world he knows, looking to settle the ultimate debt.
That plot is enough to get me instantly intrigued. Jude Law as an ex-con with a Cockney accent sounds awesome. Richard E. Grant, Demian Bichir, and Emilia Clarke just rounds out a great cast. What else could set this movie on my must see list? How about baboons and Prince William’s baby with a gangster’s head? Yeah, the posters for DOM HEMINGWAY are friggin fantastic.
We won’t get a look at DOM HEMINGWAY until it is released by Fox Searchlight on April 4, 2014, but some lucky folks will get to see it at the Toronto International Film Festival next month. Hopefully the film lives up to these posters.
