Check out Jamie Kelman’s unseen Haunted Mask makeup for Goosebumps!

Rob Letterman's GOOSEBUMPS was a fun throwback to the sizzling childhood horror stories that utilized many of R. L. Stine's most famous monsters, including the Blob That Ate Everyone, Slappy the Dummy, the Werewolf of Fever Swamp, and many others. However, there is one classic monster that didn't exactly make the cut: the notorious Haunted Mask, a Halloween mask that attaches itself to kids' faces which appeared in four different Goosebumps stories.

The mask didn't make a splash in the film, though the make-up artist Jamie Kelnan has since shared his exquisitely creepy potential designs. I understand that there must not have been room in the film for every single Stine creation, but it's a shame these creepy practical effects didn't make their way onscreen, because it's never too early to indoctrinate our children into the anti-CGI camp. Check out the prototype designs below!

In GOOSEBUMPS, upset about moving from a big city to a small town, teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets the beautiful girl, Hannah (Odeya Rush), living right next door. But every silver lining has a cloud, and Zach's comes when he learns that Hannah has a mysterious dad who is revealed to be R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling Goosebumps series.

It turns out that there is a reason why Stine is so strange… he is a prisoner of his own imagination – the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it's suddenly up to Stine, Zach, and Hannah to get all of them back in the books where they belong.

GOOSEBUMPS will be available on DVD and Blu-Ray starting January 26th. You can pre-order it right here!

“I did two Haunted Masks for the GOOSEBUMPS movie that went largely unseen. This one is the actual mask prop.”
“This one is the victim makeup, after putting on the mask that comes to life on her face. This makeup was applied by Bart J. Mixon and Christopher Nelson.”
