Steven Moffat and Mart Gattis, the creators of BBC's Sherlock, have been developing a series based on Bram Stoker's "Dracula" for BBC/Netflix which will re-introduce the world to the vampire who "made evil sexy." Claes Bang, best known for THE SQUARE and THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB, was cast in the title role last year, and BBC/Netflix have now unveiled our first look at the nefarious vampire.
I'm a fan. Taking place in Transylvania in 1897 and consisting of three 90-minute episodes, Dracula will find "the blood drinking Count is drawing his plans against Victorian London. And be warned: the dead travel fast." In a statement released when he was cast, Claes Bang said:
I am thrilled to be taking on the role of Dracula, especially when the script is in the hands of the incredible talents of Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and the team responsible for Sherlock. I’m so excited that I get to dig in to this iconic and super-interesting character. Yes he’s evil, but there’s also so much more to him, he’s charismatic, intelligent, witty and sexy. I realise that there’s a lot to live up to with all the amazing people that have played him over the years, but I feel so privileged, to be taking on this incredible character.
It's safe to say that there have been quite a number of adaptations of Dracula over the past century, but I've got faith that Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss can do something new with the story. Jonny Campbell (Westworld), Damon Thomas (Killing Eve), and Paul McGuigan (Sherlock) will direct the series. It was also announced that Lyndsey Marshal (The League of Gentlemen), Chanel Cresswell (This Is England), Matthew Beard (AN EDUCATION), Lydia West (Years & Years), Paul Brennen (Happy Valley), Sarah Niles (Catastrophe), Sofia Oxenham (Poldark), John McCrea (God’s Own Country), Phil Dunster (Humans) and newcomer Millicent Wong have joined the cast, which already includes John Heffernan (EYE IN THE SKY), Joanna Scanlan (BRIDGET JONES' BABY), Dolly Wells (Blunt Talk), Sacha Dhawan (Iron Fist), Jonathan Aris (Good Omens), Morfydd Clark (His Dark Materials), and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Misfits).
Dracula will premiere on BBC One in the U.K., but will also be available on Netflix everywhere outside of the U.K.
