When it comes to MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, George Miller and Charlize Theron brought to life one of the most badass heroines in cinema with Imperator Furiosa. Arguably, the film was more her story than that of Tom Hardy‘s Max, who was just passing through. Love it or leave it, it looks like that won’t be the case with the next MAD MAX film, if Furiosa shows up at all.
Speaking with DigitalSpy, George Miller went on to say that Furiosa doesn’t play a huge factor in the sequel(s) to come, although she’s not quite out of the picture entirely.
George Miller on whether or not Charlize Theron‘s Furiosa will be in the next MAD MAX film:
I’m not sure, is the answer. She’s not in the Mad Max [sequel] story, but in one of the stories there’s an interaction between [Max and Furiosa]. I can’t really say more than that because it’s still in progress.
Regarding the film’s subtitle, THE WASTELAND:
That name came out, that was just a working title. Nico Lathouris and I wrote deep backstories on all the characters and they eventually became screenplays – so we have two [more movies].
I’m happy to say that there’s discussions about them right now, but I hope the next film I make is a very small without any special effects and not many stunts.
Given the end of FURY ROAD, I’m totally okay with Furiosa not being a key player going forward. None of the MAD MAX sequels are direct continuations of each other and that trend should continue, giving Max a new adventure to go on in the next film with new characters. With that said, Charlize Theron helped to make what FURY ROAD what it is, so I’d be surprised if serious talk of a spin-off doesn’t pick up if she doesn’t factor into the MAD MAX films to come.
