It’s a shame about DARK PLACES, the adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s book of the same name. The material was promising (Flynn wrote it right before Gone Girl), the cast was stellar (Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christina Hendricks, just to name a few), the time was seemingly right to capitalize on Flynn’s status as a top-tier thriller writer… but it just didn’t come together. (Read my review HERE.) Perhaps the book was just a bit too dense, or maybe director Gilles Pacquet-Brenner wasn’t the right man for the job, but there was definitely a reason the film was unceremoniously dumped on VOD a couple weeks ago.
If it’s news to you that it even came out at all, maybe you’ll be interested to learn it’s headed to home video a couple of months. The film will hit Blu-ray and DVD October 6 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. Right now it looks like there are only two special features accompanying the movie: “Bringing Dark Places to Light” Featurette and “About the Author: Gillian Flynn & Dark Places” Featurette.
Libby Day (Theron) was only seven years old when her mother and two sisters were murdered and her brother Ben (Tye Sheridan) was jailed for the crime. Now, twenty-five years later, Libby discovers shocking evidence that Ben may be innocent-and the real killer is still at large.
