It's been said that the best villains are the ones which we can feel sympathetic towards. Despite their terrible actions, we can, at the very least, understand why they did what they did. The eighth installment of the FAST & FURIOUS franchise is currently in the midst of shooting under the director of F. Gary Gray and the latest villain to make trouble for Dominic Toretto and his team will be played by none other than Charlize Theron. I'm quite excited to see what Theron will do with the role and according to FAST 8 composer Brian Taylor when he spoke with Entertainment Weekly, she won't just be evil for evil's sake.
It’s like a siren kind of thing, there’s no question the havoc and villainy she brings [but] you’re attracted to it. There’s something where you can kind of see yourself in this villain that makes it more disturbing and, at the same time, more interesting. It’s the sympathetic villains, in a way, who really get under your skin. In a much different way, but like how Anthony Hopkins did Hannibal Lecter, where you like him, but you’re like, ‘Wait, why am I doing that? I shouldn’t be rooting for this person.’ She has that ability to do that. She’s just a fantastic actor.
Brian Tyler went on to say that he believes the film “will surprise people," adding "in a way, it does remind me of when I work on the Marvel films. We have different characters who were allowed to become really distinct.” Universal is hoping to keep the FAST & FURIOUS franchise going after the ten-film saga concludes (who saw that coming in 2001?) with a variety of spin-off films. Here's hoping that Dwayne Johnson's Luke Hobbs is the focus on one of those spin-offs, unless he's too busy appearing in every film ever made.
FAST 8 is set for a April 14, 2017 release.
