Could an ATOMIC BLONDE and JOHN WICK crossover actually happen? Charlize Theron has recently expressed her willingness to make this happen and I must say I'm very much here for this.
Theron has been making the publicity rounds promoting her new Netflix action film, THE OLD GUARD and during a recent interview with "The Hollywood Reporter", the actress was asked about squaring off against or with Keanu Reeves' John Wick and here is what Theron had to say:
"Listen, as soon as I get the call, I'll be there. They just have to tell me where, when and I'll show up. Keanu is one of my most favorite people in the whole wide world; I absolutely love him. I respect him, I admire him and I am so grateful that I got to make two movies with him. We both kind of find ourselves in this new stage of our career, and so much of Atomic Blonde was influenced by John Wick. So, if we can get those two characters to meet up in a timeline that makes sense, I'm all about it."
There are a few reasons why this collaboration could work and become a feasible reality. Director David Leitch provides the connective tissue because he co-directed the first JOHN WICK and took up the lead behind the camera for ATOMIC BLONDE. Also, for what it's worth, Leitch also expressed an interest in exploring a crossover between these two universes a few years back.
Theron also mentioned that she has worked with Reeves twice before so chemistry definitely wouldn't be an issue. The duo first linked up early in Theron's career in the 1997's THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE and again in 2001's SWEET NOVEMBER. In both films, Theron played Reeves' love interest so all they would have to do is switch it up to turn that romantic chemistry into some action-packed sparring and then we're all set.
The dilemma with this imaginary crossover is that ATOMIC BLONDE takes place in 1989 and JOHN WICK is set in modern-day in its timeline. Perhaps we go the prequel route for JOHN WICK which could be a sequel for ATOMIC BLONDE that would allow these two universes to link up? Closing this 25-year gap is the only thing standing in the way of what could be a pretty lucrative union.
The JOHN WICK franchise has grossed $573 million worldwide and it's unique for having each one of its entries grossing more than its predecessor. ATOMIC BLONDE was a moderate success, grossing $100 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. ATOMIC BLONDE'S cult status only has grown since its theatrical release which has led to a potential sequel being put into development at Netflix.
