Charlize Theron gives small tease of what’s to come in The Old Guard sequel

SPOILERS for THE OLD GUARD. Consider yourself warned. While Netflix hasn't officially given a greenlight to a sequel to THE OLD GUARD, it's probably safe to say that we haven't seen the last of Charlize Theron as Andy, aka Andromache the Scythian. The Gina Prince-Bythewood directed film quickly became one of the streaming service's biggest original movies, and Theron recently (virtually) chatted with Seth Meyers where she was asked about how the story will continue in the potential sequel.

The character of Quynh is kind of teased in this. She’s Andy’s kind of right-hand person. She was, the two of them, were the first, and there’s obviously a relationship there that we didn’t really explore in this film.

During one of the flashbacks seen in THE OLD GUARD, we met Quynh (Veronica Ngô Thanh Vân), one of Andy's first immortal companions. Centuries ago, Quynh was captured and placed in an Iron Maiden and dropped to the bottom of the ocean; not the best fate for an immortal being. THE OLD GUARD comes to an end with the surprising reappearance of Quynh, with little explanation given for how she managed to get out of her previous predicament. Charlize Theron teased that Quynh would play a much bigger role in the sequel, adding to the roster of female characters. "So, I’m excited if we get the chance to make another one, to explore that, because then we’re just adding another female into the mix, which I think will make it really interesting," Theron said. Although the actress was excited at the opportunity to work on a project with a larger number of women on set, she expressed sadness that this occurrence has been all too rare over the decades of her career.

It was really nice to come on set and to be surround by woman, there was just a different energy about it, and you know, not just woman, but really talented women. Like, that is the other thing that is always so crazy to me. It's not that hard to find really talented women, in all departments, not just in front of the camera, but behind the camera, and so, I really do think we have to keep the pressure on our industry to sustain this kind of storytelling, because it is really, I almost swore, effin' awesome.
