When Charlie Cox reprises Matt Murdock for the upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again, it will mark a welcome return. While Cox has played the character in small bits in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Spider-Man: No Way Home, Born Again will no doubt be the proper return that fans want. But, like fans, Charlie Cox wasn’t so sure he would ever play Murdock / Daredevil ever again, figuring his stint ended when his namesake Netflix series did.
Appearing recently at Wales Comic Con (via GamesRadar), Charlie Cox said he assumed that once Daredevil was canceled, that was it. “I really thought that ship had sailed, you know? I thought it was over…It had been a couple of years since [Netflix’s Daredevil had been canceled]. What I didn’t know was there was an embargo on that. So, there was an amount of time – I think it was probably two years – after the show was canceled before Disney and Marvel could approach us.” Cox added that the faith of some fellow former cast members left him a bit confused. “So, during that time, I didn’t know that. I just thought it was over. And Vincent [D’Onofrio], who plays Wilson Fisk, him and I would chat occasionally on the phone. And he would kind of say, ‘I’m sure they’re gonna bring us back.’ I’d be on the phone being, like, ‘Mate, the guy’s delusional! He’s got to let it go.’”
But let it go he did not – and neither did fans, launching a Save Daredevil campaign after the original that would show just how grateful Charlie Cox was at such support for him reprising the Marvel character. The original series ran from 2015-2018.
Charlie Cox is looking to ride this support full tilt and will have a few more soft returns prior to Born Again – which was delayed from 2024 to 2025 due to the ongoing Hollywood strikes – hitting Disney+: miniseries Echo and the animated series Spider-Man: Freshman Year. Here’s hoping Steven DeKnight doesn’t continue putting a damper on Born Again leading up to its release.
