After taking a vow of silence in the days following Netflix's cancellation of Marvel's DAREDEVIL, the Devil of Hell's Kitchen himself, Charlie Cox, has come forward to express his condolences for the loss of Marvel's flagship series. News of DAREDEVIL's cancellation came not long after Netflix opted to not renew both Marvel's IRON FIST or LUKE CAGE. For the time being, Marvel's JESSICA JONES and THE PUNISHER series stand as the only series not cancelled by the streaming giant, though their fate remains uncertain at this time.
"A lot of us really expected to keep going, and I certainly did,” Cox told Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview. “The truth is, I felt like we had a lot of stories to tell, and although I understand [the cancellation], I’m very saddened by that." Cox then continued, “It’s just how business works. But also, these characters mean a lot to people. It’s weird to think there’s a chance I won’t be playing Matt Murdock ever again. That’s a bizarre feeling, because that character has been such a huge part of my life for the last four and a half years.”
In talking further about the character of Matt Murdock a.k.a. Daredevil, Cox told EW that playing The Man Without Fear was a "dream job." After speaking with the outlet about how much he loved acting as the character, Cox confessed that “It’s been just the most incredible job for me. It’s so fun to do. You get to do all the acting obviously, which is great, but then there’s also this really fun physical aspect to it with all the stunts and the fight choreography.”
Shortly after the show's cancellation, we'd learned that the show's writers were shocked by the news as well, particularly because they'd already had Season 4 all mapped out. When pressed about what a fourth season of DAREDEVIL could have been, Cox was hesitant to give his take. “I hate to be boring, but to be honest, I don’t think I should answer that,” Cox explained. “It’s so new, the news. It’s quite painful for quite a lot of people. I was really excited about the ideas that were talked about for season 4, and I think if I was to speculate about it and it went on the internet, it might not be very helpful to people.… Anything I say often gets picked up and circulated, and I just want to make sure I don’t give any false hope.”
When asked if he would ever consider suiting up as the seuper-sensitive lawyer turned hero once more, Cox enthusiastically said "Oh my God, yeah," though he was quick to add “I don’t know how this would happen, but maybe one day we could pick up the baton and do it again.”
I certainly hope that, by the power of Stan Lee, Cox gets his chance to assume the role of Marvel's Man in the Red Pajamas, once more. After all, stranger things have happened in Hollywood, and Disney knows that fans would leap at the chance to see Cox's version of the character absorbed into the MCU. Perhaps we should all put our hands together and pray for a miracle?
