For all the talk of BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE being some sort of new origin story for this version of Batman, things on the surface seem to be quite simple as to how Bruce Wayne fits into this quickly expanding DC Cinematic Universe. All you need to do is take a look at the full trailer Warner Bros. unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con, and you'll get answers. But, for those of you who need everything spelled out for you, both Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck are more than willing to give you the lay of the land as to what the prologue of BATMAN V SUPERMAN entails and what it all will mean in serving the larger film.
Let's start with the Man of Steel himself.
What happens there is one of Bruce’s buildings gets destroyed and he’s trying to save all the people inside the building and he can’t. So he is this angry person who fears what Superman may do. Why are they just going to trust this super-powered alien? What if he does decide to turn against us?
Ah, I get it. When great power isn't used with great responsibility, billionaires get pissed. Makes sense.
How about you, Mr. Wayne? Care to add anything regarding your Dark Knight?
He’s found himself in a place of harboring a tremendous amount of rage for Superman. So it’s how he got there, and what that’s done to him, and what that’s done to people around him like Alfred, who are, I think, very scared and worried for him. It’s something that’s interesting and new.
Lots of resentment… lots of anger… lots of blame… That's your new Caped Crusader.
Within the context of what Zack Snyder has created, it makes sense, and adds an interesting layer to the relationship between these two superheroes. Now, to see if the rest of the movie can live up to such intelligent design (even if we only accidentally ended up here)…
Oh, and, for those wondering about Affleck directing a solo Batman movie, he had some nice deflection on the matter, as if something this inevitable needed added mystery…
If I could make it work, yeah, Obviously that would be like a dream. The trick is, as to any movie, is to make sure that you – if you’re going to direct it – that you can make it good. You’ve got to have the right idea and the right take on it… Broadly speaking, it’s something I’d be open to, for sure. It’s a very exciting idea.
If you can make it work…? Yeah, right. Whatever, dude. We all know you're making one of these movies.
BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE hits theaters on March 25, 2016.
