The new A24 film starring Jennifer Lawrence has just debuted its trailer. It’s a stripped down, intimate drama that has Lawrence returning to her indie roots. The film, titled Causeway comes from Lila Neugebauer (Broadway’sThe Waverly Gallery, Netflix’s Maid, The Last Thing He Told Me). This will be Neugebauer’s first feature film as a director.
Lawrence will be portraying a former military engineer named Lynsey, who has returned home to the United States from a tour in Afghanistan with a debilitating brain injury. Lynsey’s journey back brings a conflict that rivals any pain and hardship she had faced in Afghanistan. She must face the childhood that haunts her. Lawrence is joined by Brian Tyree Henry, who can recently be seen in Bullet Train and the hit FX show Atlanta. Henry plays James, a stranger she meets as she returns home, and he offers her a ride. However, he also seems to be hiding a suppressed trauma from his past. The two offer each other comfort on a road to recovery as they seek the company of a support system.
The new intimate drama is a change of pace for Lawrence after her recent appearance in Netflix’s Don’t Look Up. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar-winning actress explains what inspired her to take the role. “Her untenable home, her inability to commit to one thing or another because of these internal injuries that are completely invisible but huge — I think I connected with that at that specific time in my life. So much was going on with me at that time that I didn’t realize. Until I was back, pregnant, married, making it. And I was just like, ‘Oh, this is a woman who is scared to commit.’”
Causeway is also produced by Lawrence and she had taken this project after a brief hiatus for a personal life break. The drama is due to play in select theaters and stream on Apple TV+ on November 4.
