Seems like CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER is getting all of its ducks in a row as pre-production is in full swing, gearing up for the March 2013 production start. Yesterday, we got confirmation that Frank Grillo would be taking on the role of long-running Cap nemesis Crossbones and today we have more casting confirmations. Scarlett Johansson will be returning as Black Widow, Cobie Smulders will be back as Agent Maria Hill, Samuel L. Jackson will don his leather jacket and eye patch once again as Nick Fury, and, as previously believed, Sebastian Stan is back as Bucky/Winter Soldier.
What’s interesting is this tidbit from Feature Film Casting, which states, “Still to be cast is Steve Rogers’ love interest in the film, as well as Sharon Carter/Agent 13 among others.” What this confirms is that not only is Sharon Carter/Agent 13 one of the characters of the film, but that she is NOT the love interest in the film (as she is in the comics). Or is that a ruse as well? Perhaps it could explain the varying casting choices of the female lead, as one group may be testing for Carter, while the other is testing for the unnamed “love interest.” Interesting to see how that plays out.
All of these actors join Chris Evans as Captain America/Steve Rogers and Anthony Mackie as Falcon/Sam Wilson.
Additionally, the working production name for the film has been announced and it’s “Freezerburn.” The working title for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER was “Frostbite.” It’s funny that they announce this as I was under the impression that having a ruse title for the film in production was to discourage crowds and maintain secrecy. So, come March, if you live in Los Angeles or Cleveland and you see a production crew for “Freezerburn” setting up, get your cameras ready!
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER is set to hit theaters on April 4, 2014.
