Casey Affleck and Ain’t Them Bodies Saints director to reteam for the sci-fi film To Be Two

Lowery/Affleck

I haven't seen AIN'T THEM BODIES SAINTS yet, but I've heard nothing but fantastic things about the film and star Casey Affleck. THR has learned that director David Lowery and Affleck will be working together again for a science-fiction film called TO BE TWO. The movie will be adapted by Lowery from the Into the Silent Land: Travels in Neuropsychology collection by author Paul Broks.

To Be Two adapts the short story To Be Two or Not To Be and deals with identity and the self. It’s set in a world where teleportation exists and people are scanned, the digital self sent to Mars, reconstructed atom by atom, while the original is vaporized. The story then posits the idea of the teleportation machine malfunctioning and not vaporizing the original person. Who is now real? And how do experiences make them different? And what happens when the authorities want to erase the original person?

Apparently the tone of the film will be similar to Rian Johnson's LOOPER, which makes me very excited. I love smart sci-fi films and to me TO BE TWO sounds like it could be an excellent mix of THE PRESTIGE and MOON.

David Lowery has been pretty busy since completing his directorial debut: he is working on a reimagined version of PETE'S DRAGON and is also attached to THE OLD MAN AND THE GUN (an adaptation of a 2003 article from The New Yorker) with Robert Redford.

Casey Affleck's THIRD PERSON will premiere at this year's Toronto Film Festival, and he also stars in OUT OF THE FURNACE with Christian Bale and Woody Harrelson, which will have a limited release on November 27th, 2013 before going wide on December 6th, 2013.
