Cary Fukunaga teases Blofeld’s plan in No Time to Die trailer breakdown

The first trailer for Cary Fukunaga's NO TIME TO DIE was released earlier today, and by the looks of things, Daniel Craig's fifth and final film as James Bond will be one hell of an adventure. In addition to introducing a handful of new characters, the trailer featured the return of several of Bond's friends and foes, including Ernst Stavro Blofeld (Christoph Waltz), the villain who menaced Bond in SPECTRE.

NO TIME TO DIE will find Blofeld still in custody, but it seems that he still has a part to play as Bond is seen visiting him in the trailer, perhaps seeking advice or information. While speaking with Empire, director Cary Fukunaga dropped a tease regarding the mega-villain's possible plan.

Blofeld is an iconic character in all the Bond films. He's in prison, but he certainly can't be done yet, right? So what could he be doing from there and what nefarious, sadistic things does he have planned for James Bond and the rest of the world?

Moral of the tease? Don't count the author of Bond's pain out just yet. However, Blofeld is not the main villain of NO TIME TO DIE; that would be Safin (Rami Malek). "There's a new generation of bad guys coming up," Fukunaga said. "This is somebody who's hyper intelligent and a worthy adversary." Speaking of a new generation, that also applies to the good guys as well. It's been five years since James Bond retired at the end of SPECTRE, and MI6 has been recruiting new 00 agents during that time, such as Nomi (Lashana Lynch). "The trailer gets across the spirit of the new generation coming up, and always pushing at a ceiling," Fukunaga explained. "One of the themes that I want to play with in this was legacy, and Bond's legacy. After having retired, now having the new generation coming behind, is he being rewritten?"

NO TIME TO DIE will find Bond having left active service, but that all changes when Felix Leiter comes calling to enlist his help to search for a missing scientist. When it becomes apparent that the scientist was abducted, Bond must confront a danger the likes of which the world has never seen before in a villain armed with dangerous new technology. The film will hit theaters in the United Kingdom on April 2, 2020 and on April 8, 2020 in the United States.
