Cary Fukunaga to direct episodes of Apple’s WWII series Masters of the Air

It's been nearly 20 years since Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman brought us Band of Brothers, quite possibly the finest World War II mini-series ever produced. Band of Brothers was followed by The Pacific in 2010, which focused on the Pacific Theater of Operations, and at long last, a third installment of the series is in development. Spielberg's Amblin Television and Hanks and Goetzman's Playtone are developing Masters of the Air for Apple TV+, a new epic World War II limited-series that will tell "a deeply personal story of the American and British bomber boys who brought the war to Hitler’s doorstep in WWII."

Deadline has reported that Masters of the Air will be sporting some major directorial muscle as Cary Joji Fukunaga (NO TIME TO DIE) has signed on to direct the first three episodes of the series. Fukunaga has been courted to take the helm of many projects since completing work on NO TIME TO DIE, but he chose to go with Masters of the Air. Additionally, the director and his Parliament of Owls banner are also close to signing a first look deal with Apple to develop other TV projects. Masters of the Air will be based on Donald L. Miller's "Masters of the Air: America's Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany" and, just like Band of Brothers and The Pacific, the series will consist of 10 episodes. The series is being penned by John Orloff and Graham Yost, who also wrote for Band of Brothers. It's said that Masters of the Air will cost upwards of $200 to produce, so get ready for something exceptionally epic. Production on Masters of the Air is expected to kick off in March in London. I can't wait.

Cary Joji Fukunaga's NO TIME TO DIE is slated to hit theaters on April 2, 2021.
