Talking to your kids isn’t as difficult as some people make it out to be. They ask questions, because they’re curious, and, as an adult, it’s up to you to not be embarrassed and offer up an intelligent answer that will help them understand the world in which they live. Too often we hear “What am I supposed to tell my kids?” and we sit in amazement as someone shrugs their parental responsibility to educate.
Such was the case a few months ago when some dad bitched up a storm about STAR WARS Black Series action figures of Slave Leia sitting on the shelves of his local Target. He thought it was inappropriate for his daughters to see and had no answers for them as they asked why she had a chain around her neck, even though an answer about the character, her costume and her predicament wasn’t that hard to seek out.
It’s a good thing Carrie Fisher has come to the rescue, offering up an explanation for that father to give to his kids. It’s honest and direct and pretty simple when you consider what a big deal was made out of a figure wearing a costume from 32 years ago.
The father who flipped out about it, ‘What am I going to tell my kid about why she’s in that outfit?’ Tell them that a giant slug captured me and forced me to wear that stupid outfit, and then I killed him because I didn’t like it. And then I took it off. Backstage.
See… That wasn’t so hard now, was it?
Now if only we could get Bryan Cranston to offer up something good about Heisenberg selling meth to that guy who had a problem with BREAKING BAD toys, then we’d be all set. After all, why do the parenting when others can do it for you?
