Captain Phillips writer to polish script for James Cameron’s Terminator

Following the release of TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY, James Cameron had little involvement with the films which followed, and after a string of sequels which failed to live up to expectations, the man who created it all will return to (hopefully) get the franchise back on track. Set to be directed by Tim Miller (DEADPOOL), the upcoming TERMINATOR is expected to be the first of a new trilogy, will serve to hand off the baton to a new generation of characters.

James Cameron and Tim Miller put together a writer's room earlier this year, which included David Goyer, Justin Rhodes, and Josh Friedman, and now Billy Ray (CAPTAIN PHILLIPS) has joined the team and will be putting the final touches on the latest draft of the script which is based on a story developed by James Cameron, Tim Miller, and Skydance Media founder David Ellison. Billy Ray has previously lent his script-writing talents to THE HUNGER GAMES, FLIGHTPLAN, and STATE OF PLAY, and also recently worked on Bad Robot's World War II horror film OVERLORD as well as Ang Lee's GEMINI MAN which is to star Will Smith.

We still don't know exactly what type of story the upcoming TERMINATOR film will tell, but we do know that it will be ignoring much of the James Cameron-less part of the franchise, with the director even implying that it would be the true sequel to TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY. Both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton will be returning to "anchor" the story, much like the Original Trilogy characters in STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, and Cameron and Miller have been searching for a "18-something young woman to essentially be the new centerpiece of these stories."

TERMINATOR is set to hit theaters on July 26, 2019.
