Audiences are very excited to watch the powerful Captain Marvel make her big screen debut come March and aren’t waiting one extra second to get their tickets for Marvel’s upcoming extravaganza. Fans flocked to the internet on Monday once tickets went on sale, and per Fandango the movie now has the third-best Day 1 sales of any Marvel movie, coming in only behind the likes of last year’s AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and BLACK PANTHER. So, yes, things are looking good.

Now, that doesn’t mean MARVEL is destined to open to $200 million during its opening weekend like those last two movies. In fact, the fifth best-selling first day of ticket sales was for ANT-MAN AND THE WASP, which also came out last year, only to open at around $70-80 million — far, far less than those last two. However, as BLACK PANTHER proved in the weeks leading up to its release the positive buzz can drive tickets sale higher and higher, with pre-release projections nearly doubling by the time of release from where they had been only weeks before. The same could happen to MARVEL if the buzz hits similar levels.

People in the industry and casual viewers were a bit puzzled when tickets went on sale of CAPTAIN MARVEL on Monday on the heels of a brand-new trailer, going on sale two full months before the movie’s release. But I guess it doesn’t matter when the tickets go on sale, as people went out in droves to get their tickets for the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to led by a woman – with Brie Larson playing the titular character. In the end, having a better first day of ticket sales than CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL.3, SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING and every other MCU other than INFINITY and PANTHER is something to brag about, and hints the movie will indeed open to $100+ million, at this point.
Larson herself took to Twitter to thank the fans for showing out, retweeting Fandango’s picture ranking MARVEL on the all-time best MCU Day 1 sellers list.
Again, it's too early to tell if MARVEL will do as well as some of these other movies, like an AVENGERS movie, CIVIL WAR or BLACK PANTHER. That being said this fantastic first day of ticket sales is a strong sign the movie is destined for a great opening, and depending on reviews (which we won't see for over a month) the projections could soar higher and higher leading to the release.
CAPTAIN MARVEL is out March 8.
